Abstract

For purposes of this study, the author has limited her research on the topic of color selection to exhibitions of ethnic objects. Through reviewing the related published literature and interviewing museum designers, the author researched the following thesis statement. Exhibition designers from four museums in New York, the San Francisco Bay area, and Los Angeles are currently using a growing spectrum of background colors for exhibitions of ethnic objects. There are six main factors that influence the designer's choice of colors: (1) descriptive, cultural, and functional characteristics of the objects themselves; (2) theme of the exhibition; (3) mood of the exhibition; (4) sources of natural and artificial light; (5) shape and size and the exhibition space; and (6) color theories to which the designer subscribes.
