Abstract
This study examines the specific interaction between the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy in the San Diego area. The purpose of this research is to highlight technical and procedural areas for the expansion of interoperability as a means to better facilitate Maritime Domain Awareness. This research will show that in order to meet the National Strategy for Maritime Security, it is essential for the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard to work closely together in all aspects of achieving Maritime Domain Awareness. The scope of this research is limited to the San Diego Sector Command Center-Joint, Fleet Air Control Facility San Diego, Helicopter Maritime Strike Wing Pacific, and MH-60R helicopters. Sources include government policy, military instructions, academic journal articles, and academic papers written by experts in the field. While much has been done to foster cooperation between the Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security, a more accurate Common Operating Picture can be achieved through closer coordination.
