Abstract

High-Speed Rail (HSR) in the U.S. has recently been thrust into the spotlight with governmental actions allocating billions of dollars to develop high-speed corridors. This research topic investigated whether the HSR proposed in California is a safer mode of transportation. The researchers statistically evaluated the safety record of HSR outside of the U.S. against the data of automobile and airline travel in the U.S. The analysis showed that there is no statistical difference in safety between HSR and airline travel. The researchers also developed and conducted a survey to rate the perceived safety of HSR in California. Analysis of the survey data showed that HSR is perceived as a safer mode of transportation.
