Abstract

This study focuses on how museums can improve or create effective exhibits for three- and four-year-olds. To provide a framework for creating appropriate exhibits for young children, the developmental stages and the activities best suited for such children are presented. Information has been gathered through observations of young children in museum spaces and interviews with museum professionals, early childhood educators, parents, and personnel at organizations that have toddler audiences. Traditional forms of research, such as the review of written material, have also been conducted. The guidelines that resulted from this study will assist science and children's museums in the creation of relevant, child-centered spaces that are imaginative and developmentally-appropriate for children ages three and four. These spaces can promote cognitive development for this special age group, fostering an interest in learning.
