Abstract

The purpose of this master's project is to explore the experiences of museum educators on exhibit teams in the United States to assess if recent literature accurately reflects exhibition development practices in medium to large history museums. This project evaluates how museum educators view their involvement on exhibit teams and identifies and defines their particular roles and responsibilities. Institutional factors that prevent or support the influence of museum educators on exhibit teams are also identified in this project. By assessing current exhibit team practices in medium to large history museums and presenting examples of model institutions, the end product of this project is intended to inform and promote further dialogue in the field about the changing role of educators and exhibit teams and will recommend ways in which museums can improve their methods of developing exhibitions.
