Abstract
This thesis documents the production of one slide-tape program. Each step in the development of the project is discussed in detail in the hopes that it will provide encouragement and a helpful guide to institutions contemplating audio-visual programming. Chapter One describes the overall planning of a slide-tape presentation. Chapter Two discusses one aspect of planning, the development of a coherent script, in greater detail. Because the slide-tape presentation I designed was a documentary of a contemporary process, I undertook fieldwork to gather the material. Chapter Three examines various methods of conducting interviews in the course of producing a slide-tape documentary, Chapter Four discusses aspects of photography that particularly relate to museum audio-visual presentations. Chapter Five describes the rationale behind the final selection of images in my slide-tape presentation. Chapter Six examines the development of the sound portion from the initial planning to the final editing. Chapter Seven discusses the results of a screening of the program to a test audience who completed an evaluation form on their responses. Finally, Appendix A is a transcript of the script for my slide-tape presentation with slide changes noted numerically above the advance 'words; Appendix B provides a brief overview of a survey of audio-visual programs that I viewed prior to designing the slide-tape presentation described in the thesis, and Appendix C accompanying this thesis is a cassette tape of the audio portion of my slide-tape presentation.
