Abstract

This project focuses on ways in which small U.S. history museums currently deter thefts. How objects are protected, who steals from museums, and what is done once an object has been stolen was researched in order to discover a better way to protect museum collections. The purpose of this project is to give helpful suggestions regarding theft deterrent methods for protecting exhibiting objects and to explore different types of preventative measures that can be taken. The resulting booklet is intended to help small museums with few resources better protect their collections. The Security Evaluation and Theft Prevention Tips for Small U.S. History Museums brochure is a simple device that gives tips on how to evaluate a current security system and makes theft prevention recommendations readily available to museum professionals.
