Abstract
This is an engineering case study that examines the costs associated with receiving defective hardware from machine shop suppliers. When the Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) receives defective hardware it is forced to make dispositions that take into account costs associated with returning it to the supplier, using it as-is or repairing it in house. The study is performed by a cost comparison between a set of proposed policy changes versus the current practices of JPL. The conclusions of the study indicate the current practices are more cost effective for the short term however, long-term solutions should be sought to reduce the amount of discrepant hardware received from JPL suppliers.
